Heads Up: This just in from the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society:

“At the request of several high schools, the deadline for Category Seven entries for the 2010 William Faulkner – William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition was extended to May 15.

“In the interest of equality and fairness for all writers, therefore, we are extending the deadline for entries for all categories to May 15. Everything, electronic submissions and required hard copies and fees, must be in our hands by that date.  There will be no additional extensions.  Guidelines and entry forms
can be found on our web site.  If you have any difficulties downloading the entry form, e-mail us.

“Also of note: Finalists in the competition (over 100) are entitled to 50% off Words & Music: A Literary Feast in New Orleans conference registration fees; competition winners are awarded free entry (in addition to the fabulous prizes and internatioal recognition!) Many of our finalists have gone on to great success as a direct result of their entering and placing in this prestigious competition.”

Excellent news for us procrastinators out there…

Find readers who'll put your book in their pile!

According to 4/14 report from Publisher’s Weekly (click here to see full article), 764,448 titles were produced in 2009 by self-publishers and micro-niche publishers, while traditional books produced another 288,355 last year, for a grand total of well over a million new titles.

To stand out in the competitive marketplace, more authors are turning to social networking that’s targeted to connect with readers via a slew of social media sites devoted to books and writers, including Shelfari, Goodreads, LibraryThing, RedRoom, SheWrites and more.

These sites allow you to show off profiles, build audiences, and find the readers who are most likely to read your words. But more, they allow you to build connections to your audience in a meaningful way. Statistics show that readers are seeking affinity to authors more than pure subject matter.
