The Drum is an online literary magazine with a twist: The Drum publishes all its content exclusively in audio form!

They offer listeners short fiction and essays that they can listen to on the site or download to an mp3 player. In the future, they will be offering public-domain works read aloud by notable and familiar voices, as well as occasional interviews with noted authors.

The Drum launched on May 1 with work from New York Times best-seller Jenna Blum, award-winning Bret Anthony Thomas, and Faulkner-Wisdom Finalist Randy Susan Meyers, among others. The June issue will feature work from Maud Casey, Ben Percy, and Lauren Grodstein, and many other emerging and established writers.

They are looking for submissions of new short fiction and essays and encourage writers to visit www.drumlitmag.com for more information and submission guidelines–as well as just to enjoy listening to the great work currently on the site.

Heads Up: This just in from the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society:

“At the request of several high schools, the deadline for Category Seven entries for the 2010 William Faulkner – William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition was extended to May 15.

“In the interest of equality and fairness for all writers, therefore, we are extending the deadline for entries for all categories to May 15. Everything, electronic submissions and required hard copies and fees, must be in our hands by that date.  There will be no additional extensions.  Guidelines and entry forms
can be found on our web site.  If you have any difficulties downloading the entry form, e-mail us.

“Also of note: Finalists in the competition (over 100) are entitled to 50% off Words & Music: A Literary Feast in New Orleans conference registration fees; competition winners are awarded free entry (in addition to the fabulous prizes and internatioal recognition!) Many of our finalists have gone on to great success as a direct result of their entering and placing in this prestigious competition.”

Excellent news for us procrastinators out there…

William Faulkner

The William Faulkner – William Wisdom Creative Writing Competition offers competition in several categories, including Novel, Novel in Progress (for those of us who just can’t seem to finish!), Novella, Short Story, Essay, Poetry, and Short Story by a High School Student.

I’ve had the privilege of being a multiple finalist in Novel in Progress and Essay categories, and was 1st runner-up in Novel in Progress a couple years ago: I can’t tell you how many doors that opened for me!

And I’m not alone – read this great blog entry from the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society on 12 amazing success stories coming from the competition: CLICK HERE!

I encourage everyone to give this one a go. The instructions to enter are easy; the folks who run it all are first class, and the judges are well-qualified! PLUS, winners get to accept their awards in front of the nation’s best and brightest authors, agents and editors at the Words & Music: A Literary Arts Festival in New Orleans this November! Hope I’ll see you there…
